    • Vertical farming factory to be set up in Koggala

      10 March, 2019

Intifarm (Pvt) Ltd signed an agreement with the Board of Investment (BOI) recently for a fully automated vertical factory farm, the first BOI venture of such stature in the country and the largest in the region.

The investment will produce leafy greens and herbs which are in high demand for an international culinary experience. The new factory in the Koggala EPZ will cover an area of over 150,000 square foot of vertical space. Preliminary construction work on the farm is under way to commence operations by next month. Intifarm (Pvt) Ltd, Director, Malinda Bombuwela told the Business Observer that lack of constant supply of greens and herbs is a major setback to up-skill and up-scale the culinary experience for a high-end traveller in the region. Technology will address the barriers, such as adverse climate conditions, external risks, such as crop related diseases.

The advanced hydroponic technology in the facility will meet challenges of land and labour, compared to traditional cultivation due to its multi-storeyed production methodology, in a conditioned environment. It will produce pesticide residue-free produce with high-degree of sanitation.

The produce will meet the demand of the mega-cities in the region, such as Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangalore, New Delhi and Mumbai.

The project will employee graduates in the fields of agriculture, engineering and IT. Bombuwela said the company will use the technological infrastructure in the country enabling firms to diversify into knowledge sector services. Artificial Intelligence and infrastructure will be developed in partnership with AI Grow, a group company of Codegen international. Peradeniya University Senior Professor in Crop Science Palitha Weerakkody is the project advisor.

Intifarm will invest in physical infrastructure and knowledge in partnerships with commercial entities and academic institutions in Europe and the USA to develop areas, such as nutrients, lighting technology, vision and consumer safety. The new company is a joint venture of Screenline (Pvt) Limited, a provider of embellishment services for reputed global brands with a manufacturing footprint in Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia.

        March 11, 2019
The World Bank has approved USD 125 million for Smart Agriculture in Sri Lanka.

According to project documents, this will be implemented in twelve poverty-stricken districts in five provinces in the dry zone and in climate vulnerability hot spot regions of the country, covering five mini-watersheds with a project watershed area of over 272,000 ha and a population of over one million. The project involves the Ministry of National Policies and Economic Affairs.

The project area covers Ampara, Anuradhapura, Batticaloa, Mannar, Moneragala, Mullaitivu, Polonnaruwa, and Vavuniya Districts. Project documents show that the plan is to take into account the entire into account tank cascade and catchment area.

The first phase of the project will focus on Anuradhapura, Kilinochchi, and Kurunegala. The project hopes to provide adequate water and storage to hot spot areas to increase resilience to changes in climate.

Documents suggest that the annual cultivated area will increase by 80 percent from around 28,100 ha to 50,700 ha, resulting from increased and more stable water availability. Project documents show large increases in paddy production with the project. The project has a grace period of 12 years and a maturity period of 27 years.

“Innovation, including the introduction of improved crop varieties, cropping patterns, water resources management, amongst others, can help farmers adapt to changing the climate and improve their incomes and livelihoods,” said Idah Z. Pswarayi-Riddihough, World Bank County Director for Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka. The project will ensure that all farmers get adequate access to training and research. Currently, only 10 percent of women benefit, and this project will help bridge this gap and improve the productivity of both men and women working in agriculture.”

The press release suggests the project will emphasize working through farmer groups.

        • Ranil seeks to undo Sirisena’s “oily” decision

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is considering undoing the Presidential ruling banning palm oil cultivation in the country following an environmental report. During a meeting with the Plantations Minister Navin Dissanayake and the Regional Plantation Companies (RPCs) on Thursday the Prime Minister has ageed to have another look at lifting the suspension on the cultivation of palm oil. Companies have stated that they have run into a loss of nearly Rs.500 million based on the seedlings and plants idling in nurseries as the estate owners are unable to plant them ever since a Central Environment Authority (CEA) report has recommended against the cultivation of palm oil. Minister Dissanayake said that it had been found that the CEA report findings had been “wrongly” informed to President Maithripala Sirisena and based on which the latter had subjected the plantations to a total ban on palm oil cultivation in the country. In this respect, he explained that the report has recommended that the seedlings should be planted and in this respect, the RPCs should be allowed to go ahead with further cultivation. The report states: “Cultivation of viable oil palm seeds imported under the approval of the Plantation Ministry so far should be only allowed in areas identified over a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) study.” In fact, the minister noted that report has identified certain Rainforest Alliance recommendations that call for a environmentally friendly manner in which cultivation could be carried out and which could be carried out by the RPCs as well.
